How to Manually Add and Remove SSL Certificates in SmarterMail

While SmarterMail can automatically generate certificates for you, there are occasions that warrant managing SSL certificates manually via custom certificates obtained or generated externally.

Upon navigating to the SSL Certificates page in your SmarterMail Settings, 3 tabs will be selectable: an Options tab, a Certificates tab, and an Automatic Certificates tab. SmarterMail displays all non-automatically generated certificates in the Certificates tab, alongside information about them including: the file name, any associated hostnames, expiration and renewal dates, and the current status.

How to manually upload a SSL certificate to SmarterMail
  1. In the Certificates tab, click the Upload button near the top of the page.
  2. Click Choose File then find, and select, the .PFX file to upload. If necessary, enter the password for the certificate in the Certificate Password textbox after selecting the .PFX file.
  3. Click the Next button. A message should be displayed stating something similar to "Your certificate has been verified. The certificate can be used for the hostnames below..." with the hostname and the expiration date of the newly uploaded certificate filled in. If any errors have occurred, a brief message about the error should be displayed to provide more information.
(Note: When manually uploading certificates to SmarterMail, only .PFX files may be used. You may also drag and drop .PFX files into SmarterMail's Certificates folder in a server; once copied to the Certificates folder the certificates will also appear in the Certificates tab in the web view of SmarterMail. Similarly, if you use a cert generation app such as certbot or certifytheweb you can configure those apps to also export to SmarterMail's Certificates folder, from there SmarterMail should immediately pick up the new certs as long as a consistent, or no, password is used)

How to manually remove a SSL certificate
  1. Open the server's file explorer and locate the Certificates folder for SmarterMail (by default, C:\SmarterMail\Certificates).
  2. Once you've found the associated .PFX file for the certificate, right click on it then select Delete.
